I was just reading around my wall in facebook when a post caught my attention. Now mind you, this post is about second life, the virtual world that is often mistaken as a game, but in reality is just an MMO that well like most supports massive people online at one given time, but the topic is not about what an MMO is or is not. It’s about this, Gaming excess is an addiction. Now mind this topic will perobably not make sense to a lot of people that believe that excessive gaming is not an addiction, but it really is in all reality. It’s how some people cope with every day life and etc. I am sure many will not believe most of what this post is about, but I do know some will and will be mindful that because this post is just about certain things. Now before the comments come in that says “Gaming Addiction is not real” ,it is very much real. It may not be accepted by the AMA yet,but it is an addiction. When some see the word addiction they often think of drugs, alcohol. But in reality of it all. Addictions don’t always have to be with things you put into your system. There are known people who are sexual, gambling, shopping addicts all around the world. Addictions are easily to fall into if you don’t know the signs and what not. But this post isn’t about that. It’s just to help bring into light what most people who use the label “Gamer” may need help because of it. I’m not saying that all “Gamers” need help, but those that choose labels like this and are an extreme rare case because some of us have found a happy healthy balance to play video games, whether it be online or a console type game. We play around the times we have available to us to play our beloved games, meet up with people online and such. Before you scoff at the idea about this addiction just remember one thing. Everyone you meet in real life, or even online have some sort of issues they are dealing and find an escape in certain things. I should know. I use to spend my every waking moment in second life. I was addicted. I stayed in it even when I had real life things to do. I often put them on the back burner and sometimes suffered greatly for it. Also I am not trying to persuade anyone into checking out second life. I just wanted to share what most believe to find unbelievable even in a video game MMORPG like SWTOR.
This is what I found from a little online searching after reading the article and deciding that I wanted to blog about it. I found the definition so to speak of what video gaming addiction is.
The above image was taken from Game Addiction Symptoms so if you want to read more, the link is provided. Now onto what is an “Addiction.”
What Is Addiction?
Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.
This is what I found to be the most helpful definition of being an addict. The full link is here
It has even been talked about in the past with Bad Feeling Podcast, also a Hannah Milford has blogged about it as well.
